SFTY 440 Embry Riddle Aeronautical University TAWS Paper

Question Description

Each student is required to write a six (6) to eight (8) page paper (not including the title page, abstract, and references) on a topic of your choice in the discipline of system safety application. Your research must show how System Safety Concepts are being applied or could be applied, to an existing system that was introduced after an accident occurred. As an example, the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) was developed because pilots were flying aircraft into terrain due to loss of situational awareness, not mechanical problems. Throughout the course, we will be discussing the use of System Safety Management techniques in aviation and non-aviation settings. Your topic should be specifically on aircraft systems in real-world situations that were introduced based on accidents. Your topic may be on any system from real-world situations that were introduced based on/following accidents.

To assist you through this process, the project will include several key deliverables throughout the term.

Timeline and Deliverables

Module 3: Declaring a Topic

Each student must declare a proposed research paper subject/topic for instructor approval before the end of Module 3 to move forward. The course content will prepare you to choose a specific usage of system safety and be able to illustrate that usage in one or more aviation or industrial companies or areas. The eBook Central Resources page has additional resources you should review at this stage.

You are strongly encouraged to discuss the development of your research paper in the Research Paper Forum so you can benefit from the feedback provided by your instructor and colleagues.

Once your instructor has reviewed your topic a complete or incomplete grade will be applied to the Grades area. Check the comments to verify for a ‘complete status’ to the Grades area or for additional feedback from your instructor to help move you towards a completed status.

Use this discussion forum in Module 3 to submit your Research Paper Topic for instructor approval. This is a required and ungraded activity.

Module 6: Outline

In Module 6, you will submit your outline. This is a draft document outlining the major elements of the research paper. Once your instructor has reviewed your outline a complete or incomplete grade will be applied to the Grades area. Check the comments to verify for a ‘complete status’ to the Grades area or for additional feedback from your instructor to help move you towards a completed status. This activity is ungraded and required to produce a successful research paper.

These elements should be included in your outline:

  • Maintenance project design
  • Design and development
  • Repair and retrofit
  • Maintenance program operation

Papers that Do NOT focus only on a particular system and not based on an accident will be penalized, as will papers based solely on anecdotal information. Your analysis must be based on a well-defined system that has originated after an accident. The paper is intended to cause you to do some research as well as demonstrate your thinking and writing skills.

Module 8: Research Paper Submission

The final research paper is due in Module 8 and must have a body of six to eight pages, excluding abstract, the cover page, and references. The manuscript must comply with current APA style guidelines.

  • Title Page
  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Body with subheadings
  • Conclusion
  • References/bibliography

References and in-text citations should be in APA style. Be sure to review the Virtual Communication Lab & APA Resources page located in the Course Specific Information area for additional help.

Your paper will automatically be evaluated through Turnitin when you submit your assignment in this activity. Turnitin is a service that checks your work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against a database of web pages, student papers, and articles from academic books and publications. Ensure that your work is entirely your own and that you have not plagiarized any material!
