Your Big Paper Topic:

The field of comparative politics is vast and as the readings indicate it lacks a grand paradigm or “core”. Scholars differ in the questions they pose, the approaches and evidence they utilize and the methods they employ in the quest for understanding comparative politics. What is apparent is that in studying states, there are commonalities (characteristics that all states share) and differences depending on which state is under examination..

With this in mind, discuss the commonalities found in developed states and developing states. What are some of the characteristics that all states share? What are some of the challenges faced in both developed/developing countries? (i.e., explain the problems/weaknesses we find in all states). Do state responses to challenges differ depending on whether they are developed or developing? How do developed/developing countries attempt maintain legitimacy and authority? (or do they?). What do you believe is the greatest challenge facing both types of states today? Find one current event to support your position and discuss it in the conclusion of your essay.

In your discussion you should focus on the following (think about how these concepts differ depending on whether the state is developed or developing):

(1) Nature of the state and its institutions, regimes

(2) State-society relations (nations and society/political culture/identity)

(3) Political Violence

(4) Political economy/Globalization

As you discuss the above concepts/approaches make sure you clearly define them! You are welcome to include developed democracies, post-communist countries, non democracies and developing countries in your paper. You can refer to specific countries/states based on the readings and films. How you organize it is up to you! You should first define how (based on the literature) you have conceptualized a “developed” state as opposed to a “developing” state. You may want to discuss shared characteristics found in developed states and then identify shared characteristics in developing states. And then, discuss commonalities among both groups (just a suggestion).

Make sure to define (1-4) based on the course resources. Systematically apply the categories to the developed/developing states.

One more thing: You should incorporate at least 6 articles from the reader.

Don’t forget the films!
